25 years old, first offense misdemeanor larceny in NC, what should i do?

i was charged with misdemeanor larceny. its my first offense, i have never been convicted of anything, not even speeding tickets! i made a stupid mistake, i let my panic of my husband's unemployment overtake my better judgement. i am young, and want to have a second chance at life, go back to school, get a career.. do it right this time.. what should i expect, and is there any chance to keep my record clean?? i don't want a conviction, due to future job opportunities. i can't afford an attorney. i'll be going to my court date alone. i was NOT arrested. what do i do? and how do i do it?
