Rear aux/usb on car stereos?

I'm looking to buy a new car stereo so I can use my ipod properly. Some of the ones I'm looking at have rear aux and usb slots - can someone explain how you would connect to these? Would front slots be easier as you presumably just connect with leads and go, or am I just missing something? Thanks
