What kind of rituals occur during a Catholic Easter Vigil?

I went to church for my first time on Saturday night and participated in a Easter Vigil ceremony. I was very confused as to what the rituals represented. Can anyone explain them to me (i.e. sitting/standing, palm trees behind the crucifix, swinging of a smoke pendulum-thing), moments of silence after the sermon)???
