My water dragon is ingesting exo terra desert sand?

I bought exo terra desert sand for substrate but I've noticed it stuck around his lips. Is this safe? The grains are really small, almost like a dust. I would prefer not to put any types bark because I like the smooth look of the sand compared to something like coco husk.
