I just got a craftsman 1/2 h.p wood lathe dont know much about it?

i got the tools with it but they seem to be dull i tried to use it but the piece of wood looked shredded up could it be the toools or is it just becouse its my first time using one and can the tools be sharpened or do i have to buy new ones?
